HMR in National Spotlight with Cover Feature in Woman's World Magazine. Article Profiles HMR Dieter Who Lost 100 lbs.
(August, 2007) HMR meal replacements and the HMR Program for Weight Management™ received national attention when they were prominently highlighted in the August 21, 2007 issue of Woman's World Magazine. The article revealed recently published HMR data results which showed weight losses of 100 or more pounds were possible without resorting to fad diets or surgery.
The article highlighted the efficacy of using portion-controlled HMR meal replacements as the foundation for a filling, and healthy weight-loss plan. HMR founder and president Lawrence Stifler, Ph.D., was quoted in the article as saying that meal replacements are extremely effective for weight loss. "It's been proven in more than 60 studies without exception."
The article included results from a recently published study led by Dr. James Anderson, renowned researcher and Medical Director of the HMR Program at the University of Kentucky. Results from the study of over 1,000 dieters indicated that HMR's intensive behavioral treatment, which includes the use of meal replacements, is an effective intervention for severely obese individuals (Body Mass Index >40) and is associated with substantially less risk than bariatric surgery. (In the study, 25% of the dieters lost 100 pounds or more, for an average weight loss of 137.4 pounds.)
Before and after photos of Laina Vosburgh, a successful HMR dieter who lost 100 pounds using the medically supervised HMR Program, were included as part of the article. Laina had considered gastric bypass surgery, but through the suggestion of her doctor, chose the HMR Program instead.
In the article, Dr. Stifler states that the best way to lose weight is to switch to foods that provide a lot of volume for fewer calories. "Meal replacements do this for you automatically." Dr. Anderson adds that "When we prepare our own food, we misjudge calories by up to 800 a day. Meal replacements eliminiate this problem entirely."
Dr. Stifler notes that "The number one reason people go off their diet is hunger. In the HMR Program you (can) add fruits and vegetables to give the sensation of being stuffed. More is better."
